OK Don-63905, I agree with your Oct 15 comment on the Iraq war spending and the foreign goods purchasing being at the core of the US problems. Add to that the incredibly lopsided balance of energy that the US has, meaning that 2/3 of petroleum consumed is imported and only 1/3 is domestic. These, then, are three of the big issues that must be dealt with to get out of the slump.
Regarding Obama, I tend to support Republicans myself and I like McCain, but Obama has the best chance to improve the US image abroad. From where I sit (Alberta Canada) it looks like Obama will win by a big electoral landslide, but if so will he do the international things that need to be done? I hope he will:
1. Talk with all leaders without preconditions and without mentioning that all options are on the table (implying military action is an option, which of course, it always is, but rarely a good one). Find out what is bugging them about the US.
2. Remove all economic sanctions from Cuba, Iran, North Korea, etc. Do this unilaterally as a show of good faith. These can always be reinstated, but why?
3. Stop selling weapons to everyone. This is just adding fuel to the fire.
4. Get the CIA to back off. Gather intelligence - OK. But stop meddling in every other country's affairs.
